Authorities said he was in a period of declining health and died while receiving treatment at a local hospital for COVID-19.
Dowdy was a member of the Capitol Police honor guard and was the mainstay in what became known as Capitol Square’s Post 1.
“It was natural to be posted at the guard house in Post 1, Buddy, and greet the governor, legislators, visitors and others who came to Capitol Square,” said Colonel Anthony S. Pike, Capitol Police chief. “His easygoing personality allowed him to be professional, while at the same time making visitors feel comfortable and welcomed.”
Dowdy joined Capitol Police in July 1987 at the age of 27. Throughout his career, he has received numerous accolades from both the division and the members of the General Assembly.
He became a master officer in 2017 and also served as a field training officer. “Buddy chose others as career service, and we all took advantage of it,” Pike said. “We will miss him very much and we want everyone to keep his wife Cheryl, son Wilson, and other family and friends in your prayers.”
Funeral arrangements were still being made.
