The young mother, who left her baby alone at home for six days while celebrating her birthday, was found guilty of manslaughter.
Verphy Kudi, now 19, pleaded guilty to Lewes Crown Court this morning.
A court heard that the teenager left 20-month-old Asiah and his baby was partying as he starved to death in 2019.
CCTV showed that he left his apartment in Brighton, Sussex, on December 5 – his 18th birthday – and did not return until December 11.
Her baby was taken to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, but confirmed dead on arrival.A court found out on autopsy and forensic tests that Asiah’s death was the result of negligence.
She was starving, dehydrated, and also had the flu. Kudi appeared on the docks this morning in a blue face mask, a solid black top, and black pants.
She was due to appear in court later this year, but She officially filed a criminal complaint for manslaughter. After the accusation was read, he put his hands to his face.
Judge Christine Laing QC told her: “You heard that the defense wanted to get a report on your behalf before I was convicted, and a doctor will no doubt make arrangements to meet and interview you in the next few weeks.”
The judge ordered that all social work records relating to the case be disclosed to the defense before the sentence was imposed.
The trial was adjourned until May 28, but Kudi was warned that this could be delayed.
The mother, who had been in prison since her indictment in October last year, was arrested. During the trial, after the staff pointed to him, the 59-year-old father waved to Muba Kudi.
Later, he continued: “My heart is very broken. My daughter was missing. She has been missing since she was 14 years old.”
Asiah was born on March 22, 2018.
She lived with her mother in the apartment in Brighton where they are hosted by social services since 30 September 2019.
The baby was under the child protection scheme, but there was no social worker appointed at the time of death.
At 18:06 on December 11, Kudi called 999 and told a call manager that her baby would not wake up. For the young mothers they live with, staff from the Brighton mother and baby unit contacted the police days later after viewing the CCTV footage.
Cameras showed Kudi leaving the building at 5:39 p.m. on December 5 did not return until December 11.
Data collected by Sussex Police showed that Kudi was at parties in London, Coventry and Solihull before returning to Brighton.
A preventive review of the case has been initiated by Brighton and Hove Safeguarding Children Partnership (BHSCP).
