A report in the Wall Street Journal says Johnson donned the MAGA hat only to trick rioters into letting him usher other officers to safety.

According to the newspaper, Johnson told colleagues that the MAGA hat was “a trick that was part of an unconventional plan to save more than a dozen stranded police officers”. A witness told the newspaper that Johnson’s actions resulted in the closure of a key door, preventing more rebels from entering the building.
