Known as the ‘Queen of the Nürburgring’, the German driver announced last July that he had suffered from ‘an extremely stubborn cancer’ since 2017.
Schmitz was well known to British audiences as he competed Jeremy Clarkson on his own track, the Nürburgring, on the BBC’s Top Gear. The Nürburgring, whose reputation as a ‘ring taxi driver’, revealed Schmitz’s death in a statement today: ‘The Nurburgring lost the most famous female racing driver.

In a heartbreaking post on Facebook last year, Schmitz explained that his absence from the Porsche team in the Nürburgring Endurance Series was due to his illness.
She wrote: ‘Dear friends of professional motorsport, many of you have wondered why I was on the list of those who joined our Porsche in NSL, and ultimately you didn’t drive.

Born from local restaurant owners in Adenau, Sabine and her two older sisters grew up at the “Hotel am Tiergarten” (Pistenklause restaurant in the basement) in Nürburg on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Schmitz studied as Hotelfachfrau (hotel and catering business graduate) and sommelière. She lived in Pulheim during his marriage to a hotelier, but after her divorce in 2000, She owned a bar-restaurant called Fuchsröhre (Foxhole) after a track episode in Nurburg until 2003. She qualified as a helicopter pilot in 2004 .
After occasional trips in the family car at Nordschleife, all three sisters started racing, but only Sabine continued and won. At the CHC and VLN racing events, Schmitz won the VLN endurance racing championship in 1998 and won the 24 Hours Nürburgring in 1996 and 1997; all with a shared BMW M3 entered and shared by local veteran Johannes Scheid. In 2006, Schmitz and Klaus Abbelen drove the # 97 Porsche 997 in the Nürburgring VLN endurance races series entered by Land Motorsport. They placed third in 24h 2008, only to be defeated by the 2007 and 2006 winners entered by the factory-backed Manthey.
Schmitz caught the public’s attention by driving one of two BMW M5 “ring taxis” in a fun way on the 20.8 km long racetrack.
According to his own estimates, Schmitz toured the track more than 20,000 times, with an increase of around 1,200 a year. Her familiarity with the runway earned him the nicknames “Queen of the Nürburgring” and “the fastest taxi driver in the world”. says his favorite parts of the track are Schwedenkreuz (“Swedish Cross”) and Fuchsröhre (“Fox Hole”).

As a result of his popularity and charisma as “the fastest taxi driver in the world”, Schmitz has occasionally become a motor sports guest commentator and is known for his cheerfully dry descriptions of driving events. Since September 2006, Schmitz has been hosting a car show on D Motor on German television, DMAX TV channel. In December 2004, Schmitz gained greater recognition in the UK after appearing on the BBC television show Top Gear with host Jeremy Clarkson. After Clarkson (under his tutelage) set a 9 minutes 59 seconds lap time around the Nürburgring on a Jaguar S-Type diesel (Season 5, Episode 5), his best tour was “I’m telling you something, I’ll do it. Lap time in a van”. Jaguar took a lap with the S-Type and set a time of 9 minutes and 12 seconds, leaving him 47 seconds behind. While trying to shoot Schmitz while driving the S-Type, the film crew couldn’t keep up with this and had to get Jaguar test driver Wolfgang Schubauer to drive the Jaguar S-Type R chase car. In March 2015, The Guardian published a satirical article to be Top Gear’s new host for Schmitz to gracefully cancel the show, concluding: “She has appeared on Top Gear from time to time in the past and made himself for business every time. It has exactly the right mix of information and hilarity. Also, both German and female, it’s a combination of traits so unfamiliar to most Top Gear viewers that the whole show will likely self-destruct in an hour.And definitely, at this point, as they say, is included. it will be the best outcome for everyone. ”
In December 2015, the Daily Telegraph reported that Schmitz was chosen as the presenter on the revamped Top Gear. This was later confirmed by the BBC in February 2016 with the announcement of several new presenters for the show.
