The two were released and will return for punishment Tuesday, March 23rd.
Former Manchester United footballer Ronnie Wallwork may face a prison sentence after admitting that he broke a man’s eye socket one night outside.

Like Phil Neville, the 43-year-old player who played in the 1995 FA Youth Cup pleaded guilty to serious bodily harm to Alan Mulholland on December 22, 2019.

43-year-old defendant David Gardner from Newton Heath, Manchester, admitted the same charge. Alex Langhorn, representing both men, said there would be a comment that may have provoked or caused the incident that was said by the complainant to have occurred in a bar. Earlier in the trial, the former Premier League midfielder and Gardner, who also played for West Brom throughout his career, attacked the victim while speaking to them.

Mulholland claimed that his head was thrown off in the alleged incident at a bar in Tameside, Greater Manchester, and he needed three stitches, plus swelling and bloodshot.

In today’s brief hearing at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court, no further details about the attack were disclosed. Speaking to both defendants at court, Judge Tina Landale said, “Your guilty appeal will be considered in your favor, but it is important that I have as much information as possible before I convict you both, so I order a pre-sentence report.

“All punishment options, including imprisonment, are open. I didn’t ignore anything inside or outside.”

Both men were released on 23 March as they were punished.

Wallwork, who played with names like David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, and Peter Schmeichel, was sentenced to 15 months in December 2011 after being caught selling parts from stolen high-performance cars.

Police came across the illegal vehicle crushing operation in Newton Heath while investigating a series of unrelated gun robberies in Lancashire.

Preston Crown Court heard that his “promising career” as a professional footballer was “tragically interrupted” when he was the victim of a serious attack on being stabbed in a bar.

The midfielder, who represented England under 20, joined United as a trainee in 1993, but struggled for a place in the first team and was on loan to a number of clubs.

Loan terms at Bradford City, Barnsley, and Huddersfield followed periods where he only played seven times before moving to Sheffield on Wednesday, 2008.
