On March 22, Cotton allegedly stabbed 67-year-old mother Carol Brown and 69-year-old uncle Kenneth Preston in the house they shared in Southern California. One of Brown’s colleagues witnessed the attacks while doing a Zoom conversation with him. “This is a terrible incident where the mother’s colleagues witnessed the attack during a Zoom call and sought the authorities,” District Attorney George Gascón said in a news release. Brown has been a lecturer at Pasadena City College for over 14 years, according to social media. Recently, he has served as the coordinator of the Black STEM Program initiative.

Dr. Cynthia Olivo, vice president of student services, told KCAL9. “So many memories about Carol and her wonderful work and amazing spirit with so many students have been so positive, uplifting and helpful,” she said. Dionne Shelter, a former student and former PCC employee, told the news station that Brown always made students feel at home during their time at university. “I’m really sorry, I’m so sorry,” she said. “Where someone came from, what they look like, what they look like, what they look like, what they look like, or whatever and treats them anyway like you, a doctor with a doctorate degree or whatever, that’s great.” Pasadena City College did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. Lawmakers responded at around 2:45 pm to the 3100 block of N. Marengo Street in Altadena, California. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department wrote in a press release after Brown reported that his colleague had witnessed a “possible kidnapping”. When they arrived, they found Preston in the driveway with multiple stab wounds. They discovered Brown’s body inside the house. The sheriff department said they both died at the scene. During the investigation, Cotton returned home using one of the victim’s cars and introduced himself as a resident, according to lawmakers. He was detained at the scene. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the attacks. Cotton is being held on $ 4 million bail and went to court on Monday, according to the LASD Prisoner Information Center. It is not clear whether an appeal has been filed at this time, and a Cotton lawyer was not immediately identified by PEOPLE.
