Nathaniel Veltman is a Canadian man accused of intentionally running over and killing four members of a Muslim family and wounding a fifth.
Authorities said three generations of family members were “attacked” because of their Muslim religion at an intersection in London, Ontario. “In an act of murder, an individual has wiped out three generations of families. It’s horrible, ”Mayor Ed Holder told The Associated Press.
No photos of Veltman have appeared.
A human rights activist indicated on Twitter that the relatives did not want the photos of the victims to be published. However, the family later released a lengthy statement:

Police say the victims were targeted “because of their Islamic faith,” Chief Steve Williams said during a news conference that the attack was intentional.
“During the course of the investigation, we believe it was an intentional act and that the victims of this horrific incident were targeted. We believe the victims were targeted because of their Islamic faith, ”he said.
He acknowledged that the Muslim community could feel fear and anxiety as a result of the attack.
He said that people “support you and support you. There is no tolerance in this community for people motivated by hate. ”Veltman is accused of running over the family with his truck.
In a London press release, the police wrote: “Investigators believe this was an intentional act and that the victims were targeted for their Islamic faith. There is evidence that this was a planned, premeditated act, motivated by hatred ”.
“On Sunday June 6, 2021, at approximately 8:40 pm, a vehicle struck five citizens while walking on the west side of Hyde Park Road, where it meets South Carriage Road,” London police wrote in a statement. Press release.
“A black van, occupied by a lone man traveling south on Hyde Park Road, pulled onto the sidewalk and struck the five victims waiting to cross the intersection. The truck continued traveling south on Hyde Park Road at high speed. He was observed to be turning left onto Oxford Street, without stopping at the red light. Although photos purported to be of the victims have circulated on social media, Heavy is not posting them at this time due to those requests.

London police reported that the victims were “all members of the same family. Among those killed are a 74-year-old woman, a 46-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman and a 15-year-old woman. A 9-year-old boy remains in the hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries. ”

Veltman has no criminal record. Det.-Superintendent Paul Waight told the London Free Press that Veltman “has had past interactions with other police forces, but nothing of a serious nature.”
Authorities do not believe the suspect knew the victims, according to the press release.
He was taken into custody near the accident and was found to be wearing a bulletproof vest-style vest, CBC reported. The authorities have not released information that led them to believe that the attack was intentional and motivated by religion.
Authorities wrote in the press release: “At approximately 8:45 pm, the sole occupant of the vehicle pulled into the parking lot of a shopping center located at Oxford Street West and Cherryhill Boulevard, at a distance of approximately seven (7) km from the scene. The police attended this place and arrested the driver. ”
“We mourn for the family, three generations of which have already passed away,” London Mayor Ed Holder told CBC. “This was an act of mass murder, perpetrated against Muslims, against Londoners and rooted in unspeakable hatred.”
It is not yet clear if Veltman was affiliated with any outside groups. A witness, Paige Martin, told The Associated Press that the truck “roared past her” while she was at a red light.
The aftermath was horrible.
She heard screams and soon saw “a police officer performing chest compressions on one person and three other people lying on the ground,” the AP reported.
