Responding police officers soon found 18-year-old Moussa Fofana of Maplewood, who had been shot at least once, and a 17-year-old boy whose name was not released.
Fofana was pronounced dead at the scene less than an hour later, while the injured teenager was treated at a hospital for injuries that are not considered life-threatening. Authorities said the Underhill Field shooting “posed no threat to the public” but declined to reveal a possible motive. No arrests have been made as of Monday afternoon.
In a letter sent to parents and published by Village Green, Columbia High School Principal Frank Sanchez said that Fofana was a third-year student.
“This inconceivable calamity is without a doubt a devastating blow to our students, staff and community,” wrote South Orange Maplewood Superintendent Ronald Taylor in a separate letter to parents.
Suzanne Fein, who previously taught Fofana at Maplewood High School, said the teenager was “adored and appreciated” at school.

The South Orange and Maplewood School District was making counselors available to students and staff at the high school and the other schools in the district.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy referred to the deadly shooting during a news conference Monday, calling it “another case of gun violence that is among us.
