The New York Police Department flew detectives to California early Thursday with a warrant for Ponsetto’s arrest. The trip comes after days of heavy media coverage of fracas at the hotel and demands from the youth’s family and activists face criminal charges.
Sharen Ghatan, Ponsetto’s lawyer, told The Associated Press prior to his arrest that his client was “emotionally sick” and on December 26, 14-year-old Keyon Harrold Jr., at the Arlo Hotel in Manhattan He said he regretted the conflict with him.
The boy’s father, jazz trumpeter Keyon Harrold, recorded the match and posted the video on the internet.
In the video, a fussy woman appears to claim to have stolen the teenager’s phone. A hotel manager tries to intervene. In the recording, Keyon Harrold is heard telling the woman to leave her son alone. Ghatan confirmed that the woman in the video is Ponsetto.
The security video released later by the NYPD shows Ponsetto holding her wildly while trying to get away from her from the front door of the hotel. They both saw him holding him from behind before he fell to the ground. Keyon Harrold said that Ponsetto’s lost phone was actually left in an Uber and returned by the driver shortly after.
The controversy has made comparisons with cases such as the case of Amy Cooper, a white woman who was accused of falsifying a 911 call during a May dispute in Central Park, New York, and saying she was threatened by an “African American man.”
Division Captain Eric Buschow said Ventura County Sheriff’s aides had arrested Ponsetto after he saw him driving near his home in Piru, northwest of Los Angeles.
“He did not stop for lawmakers until he reached his place of residence,” Buschow said two blocks away, then refused to get out of the car.
“One of the MPs tried to slam the door, and then they went in and forced him out,” he said, adding that the sheriff’s office would ask the county prosecutors to be charged with resisting arrest.
Ghatan said he met his client on Thursday and “he sees me as a sick person”.
He said he was “enraged” by worrying about Ponsetto’s phone loss, and not for racial reasons.
“It could have been anyone,” he said.
Ghatan said the actions of CBS New York Ponstto were based on anxiety, not racially.
“He just wants the family to know that they don’t notice, care, or care about the race, creed, nationality, or religion of the other party. He thought it was his phone, and he thought it was in someone else’s hands.
