Michael Shields, 35, of Castle Bromwich, West Midlands, was detained after appearing before the city magistrates.

West Midlands Police (WMP) said a 38-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy were detained for questioning and investigations are ongoing.

Alvis Walk has not been asked to make a plea from Mr Shields and will appear in Birmingham Crown Court on Friday.

Det Ch Insp Stuart Mobberley said it was a “significant step forward” but the investigation will continue to find out if anyone else was involved.

The autopsy confirmed that Dea-John died Monday of a stab wound to his chest on College Road in the city’s Kingstand district.

He collapsed to the ground in the street and was pronounced dead a short time later.

The force said the circumstances leading up to the attack were being investigated and a specialist family liaison officer was appointed to support Dea-John’s family.
In the statement, they said he was an “incredibly talented young man”, adding, “We lost a son, his siblings lost a brother, and the others lost a friend.”

They also thanked people for their “love and support during this tragic and difficult time”. And they asked: “How many more mothers will have to mourn their sons for this to stop?”

A family spokesperson added that Dea-John is skilled in football, running and gymnastics.

WMP said it referred the case to the Independent Police Conduct Office while examining previous incidents involving Dea-John.
Dea-John was a nine-year-old student at Harborne Academy, and head teacher Sarah Ross wrote in a letter to parents and students: “Any loss of life at such a young age is tragic, but these conditions are truly dire.”

The letter, also signed by interim administrator Sue Woodward, stated that police officers will be present in and around the school when it reopens on June 7 to “ensure the safety of our community”.

The school opened an online condolence book, and the head teacher wrote: “We will find ways to remember Dea-John and celebrate his life.”
