Mason O’Grady Killed, Mahwise Rani Arrested

A fast-hitting flee driver who killed a 13-year-old boy only stopped when he was chased by other drivers.

Mason O’Grady suffered a catastrophic head injury after being thrown 85 feet on a dual carriageway by Mahwise Rani’s Volkswagen Polo.

He died despite desperate attempts to save his mother’s life.

He was walking with his family during the first Covid crash on Easter on April 12 last year, and was hit by a car on a 40 mph limit in Birmingham.

Birmingham Crown Court heard that Rani, who took an “unnecessary” trip to see a friend, did a Volkswagen Golf and the driver guessed that he was going at 60 to 70 miles per hour.

When the family started crossing the double road, the lights turned green and Mason stopped to tie his shoes.
She then rushed to catch up with her mother, stepfather and 11-year-old sister.

Rani turned to his right to escape Mason’s family but hit him. The schoolboy was thrown to the windshield, shattered, and was thrown about 85 feet forward, suffering a catastrophic head injury.

Prosecuting Deborah Gould said that there was no evidence Rani was braking and that she was followed by two drivers.

Someone switched on his lights and immediately got behind his bumper and stopped only after he got in front of it.

Ms. Gould said, “Her mother made an effort to save her life. She was taken to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where she had a heart attack.” She said.

28-year-old Rani from Nottingham had previously pleaded guilty to causing death by driving dangerous vehicles. Imprisoned for three years and banned from the road for five and a half years, Mason’s mother Hayley O’Grady said in a statement: “My life has changed forever since then.

“My beautiful son was taken from me.

“I won’t have the opportunity to see him grow up as a man.”

His sister said: “He was a friendly person who found good in everyone. He had everything in his life. He had excellent grades.”

Judge Paul Farrer told Rani as he passed the QC sentence: “You moved sharply to your right to give them (the family) room, and so you moved towards Mason.

“If you were driving at a safe speed and stayed in the first lane, the collision would not occur.” You drove the car and stopped simply because you were followed by other drivers and brought to a stop. Commendable

“This was an unnecessary journey to see a friend in the midst of the Covid epidemic.

“Mason was a bright 13-year-old boy who spent his entire life ahead of him.”

The judge said it was an aggravating feature that the boy witnessed the aftermath of his family.

In defense, John O’Higgins said, was going home from Birmingham to Nottingham.

She was driving a nice car. She had no reason to hurry.” It was driving very fast but cannot explain why. It should have slowed down.

“She cannot explain his failure to stop, except in shock or panic.

“She is devastated by what he did.She is loved by his friends and family for his kindness and generosity.”
