MArcelo Velez, Vice President of Columbia University’s University Facilities, was charged with alleged sexual harassment of a young child at his home, according to a statement from the Bergen District Attorney’s Office.

He was placed on administrative leave from the university, according to a Columbia University statement provided to Heavy.

The Columbia University website shows that Velez has been working for the University since 1995.
A university spokesperson told Heavy that Velez was on administrative leave and that the university is collaborating with law enforcement.
The statement said, “We took Mr. Velez on administrative leave and we will cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies investigating this issue.”
In the statement made by the Bergen District Prosecutor’s Office, Velez was listed as “Vice President Responsible for University Facilities” without naming the University. Columbia University profile details their achievements at the university.
“Marcelo Velez is Vice President of Manhattanville Development at Columbia University. He serves as the university’s main person in all aspects of the development, design and construction of the 6.8 million square foot Manhattanville of the University’s West Harlem campus expansion, ”he says on his website.
During his time at Columbia, he held multiple positions at the university with “increased responsibilities” for more than twenty years.

“In a previous position as Vice President of Capital Project Management for Morningside Campus, Marcelo managed over 40 design and construction personnel and was responsible for an active project portfolio with a budget of over half a billion dollars,” said the university website. “Since 2007, he has served as Vice President of Project Management and Construction on Columbia’s Manhattanville Development Group before becoming Vice President in 2016. Over the years, he has directed, supervised or otherwise presided over $ 1 billion in capital construction. ”
Velez received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Rutgers University and his master’s degree from Columbia. He also served on the advisory board of the ACE Mentorship Program, Columbia University School of Continuing Education’s new graduate program in Construction Management, and as Vice President of the Greater New York Construction User Council. Velez was arrested on Sunday (January 3rd) after receiving a report from the Woodlake Police Department accusing him of sexually abusing a child at his home. She has been charged once with Aggravated Sexual Assault, twice with Sexual Assault by Sexual Contact, and Endangering a Child’s Welfare. According to a statement from the Bergen District Prosecutor’s Office, he was imprisoned until he first appeared in court.
