Luke Joshua Letlow was an American politician from the state of Louisiana. A Republican was elected to the United States House of Representatives for Louisiana’s 5th congressional district in 2020 but died of COVID-19 before taking office.

Letlow grew up in the rural non-resident Start community west of Monroe and was the youngest son of Dianne and Johnny Letlow. He graduated from Ouachita Christian High School and received a BA in computer information systems from Louisiana Tech University in 2003. As a student at Louisiana Tech, Letlow was an intern for John Cooksey in 2000 when Cooksey represented Louisiana’s 5th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. [ He was president of Louisiana Tech College Republicans in 2001 and of Louisiana College of College Republicans in 2002.
Letlow was involved in intergovernmental relations during Jindal’s first term as governor of Louisiana during his tenure as congressional district director from 2005-2008 in the United States House of Representatives for Louisiana’s 1st congressional district, and from 2008-2010. During his tenure as director, he worked for Bobby Jindal. He later worked as director of government and community affairs at QEP Resources, a Denver-based energy company. ] Letlow returned to Louisiana in 2014, when he served as campaign manager for Ralph Abraham during the election for Louisiana’s 5th congressional district.] He served as Ibrahim’s chief of staff during his three-term tenure.
Following Abraham’s decision not to be reelected in the 2020 elections, Letlow announced his candidacy on March 9, 2020; Abraham publicly sanctioned him simultaneously with Letlow’s announcement.  In the non-partisan general election on November 3, Letlow took first place with 33% of the vote, while Republican State Representative Lance Harris came second with 17%.  In the second round of election on December 5, Letlow was elected to Congress and received 62% of the votes.

Letlow lived with his wife Julia and two children in Start, Louisiana.
During the COVID-19 outbreak on December 18, 2020, Letlow announced that it tested positive for the virus. He was hospitalized in Monroe.  After his condition worsened, Letlow was transferred to the intensive care unit of Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport on December 23. On December 29, Letlow died of COVID-19 complications, at the age of 41, just days before he was scheduled to take office.

His wife, Julia Barnhill Letlow, thanked those who made good wishes for their prayers and declared that her condition was stable just two days before her husband’s condition worsened and tragically died of COVID-19.
“Thank you everyone for your continued prayers and well-wishes,” Julia Barnhill wrote on Letlow Facebook.
As Luke continued his treatment and his condition remained stable, the doctors told us that predicting the path to recovery and the length of time was difficult and different for everyone. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for the support we have received, and we truly feel blessed to have touched the prayers of so many. However, we want your patience as you confront this battle privately as a family to give Luke what he needs to keep him healed. We will do our best to keep everyone informed of Luke’s progress through the posts here, and we will appreciate your understanding as we move forward on this journey. ”

Tragically, the governor of Louisiana Letlow died at the age of 41 from COVID-19.

According to Politico, Letlow is the first Congressman (or Congressman coming) to die from COVID-19. He was a Republican with only a few days before he took office.
What you need to know about Letlow’s wife and family
The couple has two young children, and both Letlows posted photos of their young families on their social media accounts.
Julie Letlow, who holds a PhD, is “Executive Assistant to the President for Foreign Affairs and Community Outreach at the University of Louisiana in Monroe,” according to her LinkedIn page.
Among her other roles, Julie defines her job as “providing executive-level strategy, vision and oversight to improve outside affairs and community outreach for the university. Report directly to the President and serve on his Executive Council and the Administrative Staff Council. Represent the University with members of Congress, federal, state and local government officials, governors, district heads, school administrators and mayors; including establishing and maintaining relationships with officials at all levels of government and their staff. ”
Prior to that, she served as the Executive Director of Foreign Affairs and Strategic Communications and the Director of Marketing and Communications at the same university. She was formerly director of education, director of Resident Patient Safety and Quality Improvement, and clinical instructor at Tulane University in New Orleans.
The Ombudsperson was the special projects coordinator at the University of Louisiana-Monroe and lecturer at the University of South Florida and Louisiana Monroe University.
He holds a PhD in Communications from the University of South Florida, a master’s in Speech Communication, and a bachelor’s degree in Speech Communication from the University of Louisiana in Monroe, where he was at Kappa Delta Sorority and ran athletics.
Letlow announced his diagnosis by tweeting on December 18th: “Thank you everyone for your kind words and prayers. I tested positive for COVID-19. I rest at home, following all CDC guidelines, quarantine protocols, and my doctors’ advice. ”
Letlow’s representative Andrew Bautsch confirmed Letlow’s death on WDSU-TV. He told the TV channel that the Congressman died in hospital on December 29, and the cause of death was “due to complications of COVID-19”.

Letlow was admitted to Monroe Hospital on December 19 after testing positive for coronavirus and was transferred to Ochsner-LSU Health on Tuesday, December 22, and placed in intensive care.
“Letlow was survived by his wife Julia Barnhill Letlow, Phd. And their two young children.”
“I ordered the flags to be hung on half staff on the day of Congressman Letlow’s funeral,” he said.
