Josh Miko Wiki – Scout Killed in Camping Accident
A young scout from New Mexico died in a camping accident after he collapsed on a snow cave he built this weekend.
ABC member KOAT reported that Josh Miko of Los Alamos camped with other members of the Boy Scout Association 22 in the Rio Grande National Forest on the Saturday of the incident.
The Conejos County Sheriff’s Office spokesman told PEOPLE that Miko was trying to build a snow cave, but it collapsed and got stuck inside.
The Los Alamos High School student was dug up by scouts and adult supervisors, who were found at a nearby campfire but reportedly died after being transferred to a local hospital in Chama.
His death was confirmed to PEOPLE by a spokesperson for the Scouts of America.
“This is an extremely upsetting period for our Scout family, after one of our youth died after an incident while camping. Miko expresses our condolences to his family, we will support him in any way we can. The Great Southwestern Council told PEOPLE. “We appreciate the efforts of the responding Scouts, volunteers, and emergency personnel. Please join us to keep family and friends and all those affected in your thoughts and prayers.”
The Council added on Facebook: “Scouting is a big, extended family. It touches everything that touches one. The great Southwest Council offers our sincere condolences to the Miko family and our extended family of scouts at Los Alamos.”
According to the Albuquerque Journal, Los Alamos High School Director Carter Payne said that Miko is a “well-rounded kid” and participated in many extracurricular activities in addition to Boy Scouts. She was an active member of ROTC, sang in the school’s choir, and was also a member of the Sea Perch Team, which designed and calculated an underwater robot.
