“I can stand here to express our feelings and deepest sympathies and prayers to his family, friends and colleagues, and our injured firefighter,” fire chief Daryl Osby of the Los Angeles County Fire Department said at a press conference.

The dead firefighter’s name is Tory Carlon. A GoFundMe page was set up to help his wife and three daughters. NBC Los Angeles reported that he lives in Santa Clarita and has been on the job for twenty years.
According to Osby, at 10:55 am on June 1, 2021, a “tragic shot” occurred at the 81 Fire Station in Agua Dulce.

“I am deeply saddened to stand here and say that one of our firefighter specialists succumbed to his injuries,” he said at the press conference. “He has been a brave, determined and loyal member of our department for over 20 years.”

Osby said the victim was a 44-year-old man who “died from his injuries” to Carlon.
Osby said he spoke to the victim’s family and other members of the family. “You can only imagine how they felt to lose their co-workers and a husband, son, father and dear friend.”

A 54-year-old male firefighter was also shot and taken to hospital, Osby said, where his condition is critical but stable.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said incoming lawmakers “discovered a shooting at the station itself.” The call came for the “gun victim”.

The deceased victim was a firefighter engineer who was shot multiple times in the torso. Officials said the captain also “had a gunshot wound”. Eyewitnesses immediately gave the suspect’s name and vehicle.

“Tragically, we learned that the shooter was an off-duty firefighter who came to the fire station,” Osby said.

After the shooting, the suspect “returned home, barricaded himself, the house was set on fire, and he was also found dead,” Osby said.

The NBCLA reported that the situation “ended up with hours of burning cold and fire at a property about 10 miles away in Acton.” The Associated Press reported that it purchased the home in July 2020.

According to NBC Los Angeles, police sources said witnesses identified the assailant and his truck, which police followed to Acton. According to NBCLA, “a fire broke out” there, and the suspect threatened to shoot law enforcement. After extinguishing the fire with dripping helicopters, the station said investigators found the body of the suspected shooter.

Osby added: “When I got the news this morning, it was one of the worst news I’ve ever heard in my career. As a fire chief, I’ve dealt with so many deaths and so many fallen members in my department. I always prayed we didn’t experience a death in the line of duty.”

Authorities said the attacker was working at the same station.

Authorities said the man was found with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. According to the Associated Press, the body was found in an empty pool.

Osby Says He Never Thought A Firefighter Would Die “This Way”

“I never thought it would be like this if something like this happened,” Osby said at the press conference. “I know we are in the profession of helping others as firefighters, but in this particular situation we ask for your support and assistance and ask for our prayers in times of need.”

He said firefighting is a “dangerous and arduous profession” and that firefighters put their lives at risk by responding to service calls. “I never thought that when our firefighters were in danger, they would face danger at one of our community fire stations.

Osby said it was “one of the worst news I’ve heard in my career.”
Authorities said the motive may have stemmed from “some workplace cattle” between Tatone and Carlon, according to The Associated Press.

“It looks like they didn’t like each other,” lead investigator Brandon Dean told the Associated Press, adding that the personnel files will be reviewed.

According to the outlet, “only four firefighters per shift and a total of 12 firefighters are assigned to it” at the station where the fire occurred, and employees work in 24-hour shifts.

The AP reports that Tatone has been a firefighter since 2012.
“On June 1, La County Fire Engineer Tory Carlon tragically died at Fire Station 81 in Aqua Dulce. He leaves behind his wife Heidi and three young daughters,” she writes.

“Everyone who knew Tory loved him. She was a very devoted father and husband who brought a sense of peace to everyone. She absolutely loved being a firefighter and serving others. His family and friends are devastated by this loss. We appreciate all thoughts and prayers.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom shared a statement saying Carlon’s “selfless service will not be forgotten.”

Community members held a vigil near the fire station in Agua Dolce, and hundreds joined to honor “the devoted firefighter who guided his devoted father and younger colleagues,” the AP reported.
