Writer and producer Joshua Safran, who worked with French on the Netflix series Soundtrack in 2019, confirmed the “devastating news” on Twitter on Tuesday. Additional details about the death of the French are not available, and the actor’s representative did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
“I can confirm that my good friend, colleague, and all my inspiration Jahmil French died yesterday,” Safran wrote. “Just to post it because I saw the story come out there. I will have more to say about him later. Right now, we are all processing this devastating news.”

Christina Milian, who also starred in Safran’s Soundtrack, commented on the French’s latest Instagram post in January and said, “You will be missed.
Several of the former Degrassi costars of the French also paid tribute to the Canadian actor on social media.
“@jahmilfrench, you’ll always have a very special place in my heart,” Melinda Shankar wrote on Instagram, along with a series of photos of herself and the French over the years. “Thank you for being one of the most talented, compassionate, kindest, funniest friends I have. You are so loved. I have been sharing my favorite photos over the years to highlight your bright light. I will miss our dance.”
In Degrassi, 29-year-old Shankar played Alli Bhandari, the love of the French character. Fans of the show came to talk about their relationship as “Bhandurner”, which the actress spoke of for honoring French.
In one of the Twitter tributes he wrote “Bhandurner forever in my heart”.

Still in shock, “Chloe Rose tweeted, sharing a few French photos.” Jahmil will be missed. He was an integral part of the Degrassi family and certainly was a big part of my Degrassi days. He always wanted to make people laugh and smile, it was a real pleasure to be around. Rest in peace.”
Annie Clark tweeted a video of the French dance onstage and wrote alongside: “Our friend Jahmil French is heartbroken from the loss. This video is always how I will think of him. It’s so full of energy and fun. He was always dancing. He’s a real talent and great friend We will all miss you very much, Jahmil.

Another former Degrassi star, Jessica Tyler, took a long homage to French on Twitter and Instagram.
“I enjoyed working with Jahmil for several years with me and my fellow cast members,” she wrote. “And although it was work, it never felt that way. We all grew up together. There are so many memories to look back on.”
“Although we have not all been in touch since the end of Degrassi – and for any reason other than the simple fact that time and life are zero at the end of the day, we are a family,” Tyler continued. “It always was, we will always be. We are forever connected with the unique experience we call Degrassi. A place that most of us would call home today.”
“You loved Jahmil so much,” the actress finished. “My heart goes to you and your family. May you rest in peace. Your kindness and bright light will not be forgotten. I love you very much, my friend.”
