Derek Chauvin Wiki – Arrested

Derek Chauvin, former Minneapolis police officer accused of murdering George Floyd, will be tried alone in early March by a judge on Monday.

According to the decision of Hennepin District Judge Peter Cahill, in Chauvin’s trial, the jury selection was held on 8 March so that opening speeches would not be made before 29 March.

According to Cahill, three other policemen, Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao, who accused him of playing a role in Floyd’s death, will be tried together from August.

Prosecutors were surprised by the verdict, and Attorney General Keith Ellison said all four policemen should be tried in the same case.

“We respectfully disagree with the court’s decision to separate three defendants from the other and the timing of the hearings,” Ellison said in a statement. Said.

“We believe that all four defendants should be tried jointly, as we discussed a few months ago and the judge acknowledged in the November judgment.”

“The evidence against each defendant is similar” and holding multiple hearings “could re-traumatize eyewitnesses and family members,” Ellison said.

Chauvin’s attorney Eric Nelson declined to comment on Tuesday.

Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter and faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted.

The murder of Floyd, a Black man who died while being pinned to the ground under Chauvin’s knee on May 25, sparked protests against systemic racism around the world.

The slow efforts of the March 13 police to murder Breonna Taylor in Louisville and to try the murderers of Ahmaud Arbery also contributed to the mass protests during the summer.
