A former rugby player who raped a 12-year-old schoolgirl after he secretly became obsessed with her has been jailed for more than 13 years.
Damien Twizell, 33, raped the girl in a house before posing as two young men on Snapchat to harass her with sexually explicit messages.
Twizell was arrested last October after he himself suggested that the distraught girl report him to the police when he sent her Snapchat messages saying that she had been raped, unaware that she was communicating with her attacker. The former Tyldesley, Greater Manchester support striker, who met the girl through friends, was found to have photos of the victim on his mobile phone. In a statement, the girl now in therapy said: ‘I have had frequent flashbacks and they never get out of my head.
‘I don’t even like to sit quietly because I think it will bring them back. I have nightmares and see dark figures behind me only to turn around and find no one there. I see non-existent figures in the mirror and I still think that he is looking at me.
‘I don’t know what impact this will have on me at school. I am self conscious and now I am afraid of men and being alone with them I am paranoid all the time and I am constantly anxious. My life has turned upside down and the feelings I have have been affecting my entire life.
‘There is not a single element of my life that has not been affected by what he did to me. I don’t know why this happened and it feels too much to handle. ” At Bolton Crown Court, Twizell admitted to rape, assault and sexual communications with a child.
Accuser Fiona Clancy said: ‘She has suffered severe psychological harm … He obtained her Snapchat details from her and sent her messages posing as a young person and misleading her about her true identity.
In the course of that online conversation, he engaged in sexual communications. At one point, she revealed that she had been raped and he told her that she should reveal it to someone. There was a degree of planning for this crime. ‘
The court heard that the girl’s parents were said to be ‘shocked and devastated’ by her daughter’s ordeal.
To mitigate Twizell, defense attorney Stuart Neale said his client had planned to commit suicide after the attack.
Mr. Neale added: ‘Your admissions of him in the police interview were immediate, not forced and included total remorse. The fact that he even encouraged her to report it illustrates her deep awareness of what happened.
“She Previously she had an exemplary character, she had a perfect life and has thrown it all away.”
Twizell will have to sign the Sex Offender Registry for life and will not be able to communicate with children under the terms of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
He was sentenced to 13 years and four months in jail and will be on probation for an additional year under the terms of an extended sentence.
In sentencing, Judge Timothy Stead told Twizell that she had engaged in ‘particularly insidious and unsavory offenses’ and told her:’ The girl will have to live and deal as best she can with the knowledge of what happened to her. .
‘The effect of her on her cannot be overstated. She is continually relieving the events that she has been subjected to. She has flashbacks and nightmares and they are a troubling indication of the depth of the damage done.
‘The damage to her continues and it’s hard to calculate
