Pfc. Dalton Beals, 19, died Friday during training at a Navy base on Parris Island.

The Marine Corps launched an investigation after a young recruit was killed during a grueling 54-hour training exercise known as the ‘Crucible’.

Pfc. Dalton Beals, 19, died midway through the exercise, which took place on Parris Island in South Carolina on Friday.

Beals had been assigned to Echo Company in the 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, and the Crucible completed an intense 13-week training camp.

“Our condolences to the Dalton family, Marines and Echo Company personnel,” wrote the Marines, announcing the death in a Facebook post.

The Marines website states that the Crucible is a series of challenges that tests the physical strength, skills, and Marine Corps values ​​of the recruits they have learned during training.

He adds that recruits “are only allowed a limited amount of food and sleep.”

A GoFundMe page has raised more than $ 26,000 for the family to help cover the costs of the funeral.

The Marines have not stated when they expect their investigation to be completed.
