Both of his parents are of Jewish descent from Poland and Lithuania. Cliff aspired to become the first South African swimmer to win an Olympic Gold from a very young age. His mother, who was a swimming teacher, taught him from a very young age and started showing talent as a gymnast at the age of 6. By the age of 15, Cliff reached a national level in both swimming and gymnastics in South Africa, but he decided to quit his gymnastics training to focus better on swimming.
