32-year-old father accused of manslaughter after his five-week-old son was found dead in the forest just HOURS after holding a press conference with the baby’s mother pleading for the child to return safely
- Caleb Whisnand Sr, 32, was accused of reckless manslaughter in the death of his five-week-old son, Caleb ‘CJ’ Whisnand Jr.
- Authorities in Alabama found CJ’s body in the woods on Wednesday.
- Just hours before his father’s arrest, he attended the press conference with CJ’s mother and made a plea for his son’s extradition.
- Whisnand reported that his son was missing at a gas station on Monday night, but the missing child alarm said the baby was last seen at 9pm on Saturday.
- Whisnand said at a press conference on Wednesday that he did not remember much.
- Whisnand was currently charged with unrelated charges and reckless endangerment of the possession of meth and heroin.
Old Whisnand said at the press conference that he did not remember much and asked the public for information, including his whereabouts before disappearing.
I do not remember much. But I remembered leaving the cops. Anywhere I can go if there is someone, ‘he said.
Gardner, 28, said that his youngest son was with Whisnand and realized that the baby was missing when he went to a gas station on Monday to pay.
“Please, find him, please,” Gardner told reporters Wednesday afternoon.
Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Captain Trent Beasley said authorities were warned of the situation after receiving a 911 call about the missing child from a convenience store Monday night. However, the missing child alert from the Alabama Police Department said the baby was last seen at 9pm on Saturday.
And at Wednesday’s press conference, Whisnand Sr told reporters that the last Saturday night for the whole family was ‘while we were all asleep’.
A few minutes later, his girlfriend said he was home with his 2-year-old daughter on Monday, and CJ was with Whisnand Sr at the gas station Monday night.
Neither parents nor officials made a statement for the inconsistency in the timeline, nor addressed the whereabouts of the baby until 22:45 on Saturday, when Whisnand reported his disappearance at the Circle K gas station on Wetumpka Highway. At the time of his arrest, Whisnand was already indicting charges stemming from his June 2020 arrest, not related to the possession of meth and heroin, reckless endangerment, and possession of drug equipment.
CJ’s grandmother Margaret Hope told Al.com that her daughter was about to leave Whisnand at the time of the disappearance and death of her children.
Whisnand was taken to the county prison with the number of reckless manslaughter that could be punishable by a prison sentence of up to 20 years. The bond was set at $ 100,000.
