Amelia “Terry” Martinez, an LAPD sergeant and mother of three, died of COVID-19 complications.
Martinez, who was appointed to the Hollenbeck Division and worked in the department for more than 27 years, succumbed to a new respiratory illness on Tuesday, the Los Angeles Police Department announced on Wednesday.
According to the NBC LA report, Martinez is the third LAPD officer and the fifth LAPD employee to die from COVID-19.
She survived by her sons Robert and Steven and daughter Amanda Lara, as well as her mother and several siblings.

In the LAPD statement, Chief Michel Moore described Martinez as “a bright shining star” and said that his death was “a loss not only for his siblings in the Division, but also for the people of Los Angeles, whose life he devoted to protecting and serving.”
“Sergeant Martinez, thank you for your service and you will be greatly missed,” he added. “May God accept you home and bless the Los Angeles Police Department.”
Hollenbeck’s commander, Captain Rick Stabile, shared a message on social media that Martinez “has served the citizens of Los Angeles for more than 27 years. He is loved by the officers and the public”.
California Governor Gavin Newsom also made a statement about Martinez’s death. “Jennifer and I are deeply sorry to learn of Sergeant Martinez’s death,” he wrote. “His courage, his devoted service and sacrifice to the people of Los Angeles for decades will never be forgotten. We offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and members of the Los Angeles community who suffered from their loss.”
Martinez’s death has been particularly severely affected by the virus in recent months as positive COVID-19 cases continue to increase across the country and the world.
With 281 deaths reported on Wednesday evening alone, at least 12,955 coronavirus-related deaths have occurred in the county since the onset of the pandemic, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
The Ministry of Health adds that there are 14,564 new COVID-19 cases in the district so far with 958,497 cases, and 7,949 people are currently hospitalized due to the virus.
