Two Man Accused caned 77 times for gay sex in Indonesia

Two men in Indonesia’s conservative province of Aceh were reed 77 times Thursday after their neighbors reported the Islamic religion to the police for having sex. Dozens of people witnessed Banda Aceh’s stick in Tamansari city park. Aceh, the only province in Indonesia that enforces Sharia law, is the third time that it has expelled people from homosexuality since the introduction of Islamic law as a concession made by the government to end a longstanding separatist rebellion in 2015. 27 and 29 were whipped on their backs, and a team of five practitioners in robes and hoods took turns comforting each other after every 40 strokes, grimacing in pain. Heru Triwijanarko, Aceh’s deputy chief sharia police chief, was arrested after men were suspected and entered their rented room in November, saying they were caught having sex. Last month, a Sharia court sentenced each man to 80 hits, but after a remission for his time in prison he was shot 77 times with a stick.
The other four received 17 hits for extramarital affairs and 40 hits for alcohol. Sharia law allows up to 100 flogging for moral crimes, including homosexual sex. Beating is also punishable by adultery, gambling, alcohol, and women who wear tight clothing and men who miss the Friday prayer.
Apart from Aceh, homosexuality is not illegal in Indonesia, but the country’s low-profile LGBT community has been under siege in recent years.
